15-year-old Tsepan Mpo Monare will represent South Africa with the song “Africa” at the 2023 “Our Generation” competition.
Tsepan hails from the small village of Makvane. She began singing at a very young age. Music theory was Tsepan’s favorite subject at school. The first song she learned by herself was “Unkulunkulu Wenyukile,” currently her favorite song is “I Feel Pretty” from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
Tsepan admits that music helps her deal with sadness and express her emotions. She particularly likes choral, classical, and operatic music. Tsepan spends most of her time steadfastly training. She also spends much of her time listening to music, dancing, reading, and watching YouTube and TikTok videos.
Tsepan dreams of performing at the world’s leading opera theaters and telling young people about the importance of classical choral music once she becomes a professional singer.
